The city of Madrid, because of its location, in a valley surrounded by mountains, each autumn-winter air pollution episodes are produced mainly due to NOx. Particularly, it is found that diesel vehicles, even also current Euro6 models, are the main polluters. Solutions, beyond UE penalties to Spain because of the unfulfillment of air quality standards, require drastic improvements in diesel vehicles emissions (starting in 2019) as well as a gradual decline in the diesel fleet.
