The Oligocene-Miocene Port Vincent Limestone of South Australia is largely a cool-water carbonate, composed of calcitic constituents and comprises several metre-scale subtidal cycles, each capped by a hardground. The cool-water diagenetic model improves our understanding of such diagenesis and serves to progressively refine the model for interpreting the diagenetic history of Cenozoic as well as many ancient calcitic carbonates. Furthermore, the model can be applied towards directing the course of exploration for hydrocarbons and economic ore deposits.
